If you are a cross-country skier, you are participating in one of the most difficult endurance sports, as its motions use every major muscle group. You also are able to enjoy the beautiful outdoor experience it provides, even at easy to moderate levels. In addition, you are continuing the tradition which has been used by explorers for transport, and by all Nordic armies who have ski-trained infantry for winter operations. The Mammoth area has many groomed skating, classic and snowshoe trails for all levels of ability. For the ultimate challenge, look for blue diamonds marking expert level cross country ski trails.
Check the Mammoth Nordic website for updates on trails at Shady Rest Park, Mammoth Creek and Obsidian Dome Nordic areas, and the Mammoth Visitor Center at the entrance to town serves as the trailhead for numerous trails as well as providing free winter recreation maps. Check out Rock Creek Lodge, which also has a restaurant and cabins. Inyo Craters Trail is an 8 km round trip, which is relatively flat and easy to moderate, is well used so you won't be all alone! Or try Shady Rest Park off of Main Street which has miles of groomed trails.
No matter what your level of experience, you are sure to find the perfect outlet for your Cross Country experience in Mammoth Lakes!
