Snowmobiles provide another kind of fun outdoor exercise and exploration in the beautiful snow-covered mountains of Mammoth Lakes. Trails winding through the pines provide stunning vistas, and occasional encounters with local wildlife!
Mono County works in cooperation with California's Off-Highway Vehicle Division to groom approx. 100 miles of groomed trails, and there are about 75,000 acres of open expanse to explore. Look for the orange diamonds marking snowmobile trails throughout the backcountry. Check out Sand Flat, Crater Flat and Mammoth Scenic Loop for trails to accommodate all levels of riders. Other snowmobile destinations include Lookout Mountain, Inyo Craters and Bald Mountain.
Be sure to check a current local weather forecast before venturing out, and turn back if conditions deteriorate. You should also check with Eastern Sierra Avalanche center at 760-924-7746, and be sure to let someone know where you are going and when you will return. Winter storms can arrive unexpectedly fast, and can be quite dangerous, even to the experienced visitor, so be sure to take precautions.
